Test-Day Guide

DSST Test Day Guide

Everything to know before your DSST exam — where to test, ID rules, calculator policy, scoring, retakes, and military funding.

Where you take it

Can I take DSST at home?

Not yet — DSST is currently in-person only at an official Prometric or Pearson VUE test center. If at-home testing matters to you, consider a CLEP equivalent (many DSST topics overlap with CLEP). See CLEP options →

How do I find a DSST test center?

Use the DSST test center finder. Military base education centers often host DSST exams for free to service members.

What you bring

What ID do I need?

Government-issued photo ID — driver's license, passport, state ID, or military CAC. The name on your ID must match your DSST registration exactly.

Can I use a calculator?

Calculator policy varies by exam. Most DSST STEM exams (Principles of Finance, Money and Banking, Astronomy, Environmental Science) provide an on-screen calculator. You cannot bring your own. Check DSST fact sheets →

During & after the exam

How long are DSST exams?

Most DSST exams: 120 minutes, ~100 multiple-choice questions. That's about 72 seconds per question — faster than CLEP's pacing.

Is there a guessing penalty?

No — always guess. DSST uses rights-only scoring like CLEP. Random guess gives you 25% (4 answer choices A-D).

When do I get my score?

Unofficial scaled score displays immediately after the exam. Official score (200–500 scale) reaches your school in ~2 weeks. Passing is typically 400, but verify with your college — some require 415 or higher.

Does a failed DSST score show on my transcript?

No. Like CLEP, only passing scores are recorded. Failing leaves no visible record.

Retakes

How long do I wait to retake?

No waiting period. DSST lets you retake whenever you schedule, same fee ($100). Much faster turnaround than CLEP's 3-month rule.

Military / DANTES funding

Is DSST free for military?

Yes — DANTES funds the first attempt at every DSST exam for eligible active-duty, reservists, National Guard, Coast Guard, and their spouses. Book through your base education office.

What about retakes — are those free too?

DANTES funds the first attempt. Retakes are typically out-of-pocket ($100) unless covered by Tuition Assistance (TA) or GI Bill benefits. Ask your ed center — some bases cover more.

Can I use TA for DSST?

Yes. Most branches allow Tuition Assistance for DSST exams — confirm with your ed counselor. GI Bill can also cover DSST under the category of "licensing & certification" tests.
