Test-Day Guide

CLEP Test Day Guide

Everything to know before your CLEP exam — where to test, what to bring, what to expect, how scores work, and what to do if you need a retake.

Where you take it

Can I take CLEP at home or do I need a test center?

Both options work. At home via OnVUE remote proctoring, or in person at a Pearson VUE / Prometric / college test center. Exam content is identical — pick whichever you're more comfortable with. Full at-home guide (Mac + PC) →

Is online the same difficulty as in person?

Exactly the same. Same questions, same time limits, same scoring. The only differences are environment (your room vs. a test center) and scratch work (virtual whiteboard online; paper in person).

How do I find a test center near me?

Use College Board's test center search. Most community colleges and universities host CLEP — many are close to you even if your school doesn't have one.

What you bring / what's provided

What ID do I need?

A government-issued photo ID with your signature — driver's license, passport, state ID, or military CAC. The name on your ID must exactly match your CLEP registration. If it doesn't, you'll be turned away.

Can I bring my own calculator?

No. CLEP provides an on-screen calculator for exams that allow one (Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, College Math, Financial Accounting, and a few others). Practice with the real on-screen tool before test day. Full calculator policy →

Can I use scratch paper?

In-person: yes, the center provides paper and collects it after. Online (OnVUE): you get a virtual on-screen whiteboard. Practice with the virtual version if testing at home — writing with a mouse is its own skill.

During the exam

Are there scheduled breaks?

No scheduled breaks on most CLEP exams. If you need the restroom, the clock keeps ticking. Use the bathroom before you check in.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No — always guess. CLEP uses rights-only scoring, so wrong answers are ignored. Leaving a question blank guarantees 0 points; a random guess gives you 20%; eliminating one option bumps it to 25%. Never leave anything blank.

Can I skip a question and come back?

Yes. Mark it for review and jump back at the end. Don't spend more than ~90 seconds on any one question in your first pass — bank the easy points, then return to the hard ones.

After the exam

When do I get my score?

Most CLEP exams give you your unofficial score immediately when you finish. Essay exams (like CLEP College Composition) take 2–3 weeks because they're human-graded. Official scores reach your college in ~2 weeks.

How do I send scores to my college?

Your first transcript is free when you register — pick your school during registration. Additional schools: $20 each at clep.collegeboard.org → Score Reports.

Does a failed score show on my transcript?

No. Only passing scores are ever recorded on an official transcript. If you fail, there's no visible record and you can retake after the waiting period.

Retakes

How long do I have to wait to retake?

3 months between attempts on the same CLEP exam. Retake fees are the same as the original ($97).

Are there limits on total retakes?

No lifetime cap. You can retake as many times as you want as long as you wait 3 months between attempts.

How do I avoid needing a retake?
