Full system requirements

Run the Pearson VUE system test at least 2 days before your exam. It checks all of this automatically.

  • iPad / tablet (not supported)

  • Wired Ethernet preferred
  • No VPN / corporate network
  • No hotspot (unless emergency)

Hardware

  • Microphone (built-in fine)
  • 4 GB RAM minimum
  • No dual/external monitors — disconnect
  • No headphones / earbuds

Environment

What to expect — step by step

  1. 1

    Register at clep.collegeboard.org

Pick your exam, pay the $97 fee. Select 'Online' (OnVUE) as your delivery format. Schedule a time — slots are available 24/7.

  2. 2

Run the OnVUE system check (3 days out)

Do this BEFORE exam day from the same room you'll actually test in. Validates your webcam, mic, internet speed, and admin rights. Fixes 90% of issues.

  3. 3

30 minutes before the exam — launch OnVUE

Close every other app. Disable notifications. Unplug dual monitors. Clear your desk. The check-in process starts about 30 min before your scheduled time.

  4. 4

    Check-in with the proctor

Show your government ID on camera. Do a 360° room scan (slowly pan your webcam around the room). Show your workspace — the proctor will tell you what to move.

  5. 5

    Take the exam

Standard CLEP timing (usually 90-120 minutes). The proctor watches via webcam throughout. No breaks — clock keeps running if you step away. Scratch paper is virtual on-screen.

  6. 6

    See your unofficial score immediately

For most CLEP exams, you see your scaled score (20–80) the moment you finish. Essay exams (like CLEP Composition) take 2–3 weeks. Official score transfers to your school in ~2 weeks.

What can go wrong (and how to fix it)

Every one of these is fixable. The key is spotting issues before test day.

System check fails on my Mac

Fix: Re-run in Safari or Chrome (not Firefox). Grant webcam, mic, and screen-recording permissions in System Preferences → Security. Disable any VPN. Restart and try again.

My internet drops mid-exam

Fix: OnVUE saves your progress automatically. Reconnect within ~15 minutes and you'll resume where you left off. If you can't reconnect, call Pearson VUE support immediately — they'll usually reschedule for free.

Proctor says my room setup is wrong

Fix: Listen carefully and fix what they ask — move papers, remove a poster, adjust lighting. They're not trying to fail you; they want the session to start cleanly. Most fixes take 30 seconds.

My webcam won't detect

Fix: macOS: System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Camera → enable OnVUE. If using an external cam, plug it into a USB port directly (not a hub). Quit and relaunch OnVUE.

I need the bathroom mid-exam

Fix: You can go — but the clock keeps running. Bathroom breaks are allowed on some exams, not others. Use the restroom BEFORE you check in to avoid this entirely.

Someone walks into my room

Fix: Ask them to leave immediately. If the proctor sees another person, they may pause or terminate your exam. Lock the door before you start.

The on-screen calculator looks confusing

Fix: It's deliberately basic. Practice with the real one by running through CLEP mock exams — PrepLion's mocks mirror the OnVUE calculator interface, so you won't be fumbling on test day.

Now that you know HOW — do you know if you're READY?
