SAT and ACT Math calculators

Desmos helps on some math questions. It is not the whole strategy.

Use this guide to decide when Desmos is worth it, when your usual calculator is faster, and how to practice for the test you are actually taking.

Digital SAT

Desmos is built into Bluebook for the SAT Math section. You should know the basics because the tool is there on test day.

ACT

Desmos is not provided on the ACT. Bring your own approved calculator and practice with what you will carry.

Decision guide

When Desmos helps, and when it slows you down

Usually worth trying

  • Graph intersections and systems of equations
  • Checking a table, line, parabola, or solution set
  • Regression and statistics when a calculator method is allowed
  • Visualizing a word problem after you translate it

Often faster without it

  • Simple factoring or arithmetic you can do in a few seconds
  • Questions where setting up the graph takes longer than solving
  • ACT practice if you will use a TI-84 or another approved calculator on test day
  • Any problem where you are guessing how to type the expression

Worked examples

Same problem, two paths

The point is not to use Desmos every time. The point is to know which path is cleaner.

Systems of equations

Solve: y = 2x + 1 and y = -x + 7.

With Desmos

Graph both lines and read the intersection: (2, 5).

Without Desmos

Set 2x + 1 = -x + 7, so 3x = 6, x = 2, then y = 5.

Decision: Desmos is useful if the equations are messy or answer choices are coordinate pairs. Algebra is just as fast here.

Regression or data fit

A data set looks nearly linear. Which equation best models it?

With Desmos

Enter the table, run a linear regression, and compare the slope/intercept to the choices.

Without Desmos

Estimate slope from two points and eliminate choices that miss the trend.

Decision: Desmos can save time when the data is tedious. On ACT, use the calculator you will bring and already know.

Factoring

Factor x^2 - 9x + 20.

With Desmos

Graphing works, but typing and interpreting roots is extra work.

Without Desmos

Find two numbers that multiply to 20 and add to -9: -4 and -5. So (x - 4)(x - 5).

Decision: Algebra is faster. Do not force Desmos onto problems that are built for mental structure.
