CLEP Principles of Marketing cheat sheet

A condensed reference for the formulas, graph-reading rules, and must-know facts most worth reviewing before exam day.

The marketing mix (4 Ps)

  • Product: the good/service, features, branding, packaging, and the product life cycle.
  • Price: pricing strategies (penetration, skimming, cost-plus, value-based).
  • Place (distribution): channels, intermediaries, direct vs indirect, logistics.
  • Promotion: the promotion mix — advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, public relations.

Core frameworks

  • STP: Segmentation (divide the market) → Targeting (choose segments) → Positioning (define the value in the customer's mind).
  • Product life cycle: introduction → growth → maturity → decline; strategy changes at each stage.
  • Marketing concept: satisfy customer needs at a profit (vs the older selling/production concepts).
  • SWOT: strengths, weaknesses (internal); opportunities, threats (external).
  • Consumer decision process: need recognition → information search → evaluation → purchase → post-purchase.
