CLEP Exam Day: 12 Tips to Pass on Your First Attempt
You've studied. You've practiced. Now it's exam day. These 12 strategies will help you maximize your score.
Before the Exam
1. Sleep Over Study
Don't cram the night before. Sleep consolidates memory. A rested brain performs 15-20% better than a tired one.
2. Arrive Early
Get to the testing center 30 minutes early. You'll need time to check in, store your belongings, and settle your nerves.
3. Bring Valid ID
Government-issued photo ID that matches your registration name. No ID = no exam.
4. Eat a Real Meal
Your brain burns glucose. A protein-rich meal 1-2 hours before the exam sustains focus better than caffeine alone.
During the Exam
5. Read Every Option
Don't pick the first answer that looks right. Read all four options. CLEP distractors are designed to catch people who rush.
6. Use Process of Elimination
Can't identify the correct answer? Eliminate obviously wrong ones. Going from 4 options to 2 doubles your odds.
7. Manage Your Time
CLEP gives you about 75 seconds per question. If you're stuck for more than 90 seconds, flag it and move on.
8. Answer Every Question
There's no penalty for guessing on CLEP. Never leave a question blank. A random guess has a 25% chance of being correct.
9. Flag and Return
Use the flag feature for questions you're unsure about. Answer them quickly, then return to review at the end.
10. Watch for "Except" and "Not"
Questions with "All of the following EXCEPT..." or "Which is NOT..." are designed to trip you up. Read carefully.
Handling Anxiety
11. Breathe
If you feel anxious, take 3 deep breaths. Box breathing (4 in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold) calms your nervous system in 30 seconds.
12. Remember the Stakes
A CLEP exam costs $93. A college course costs $1,200+. Even if you don't pass, you only lose $93 and can retake in 3 months. The downside is tiny.
The Most Important Tip
